NJ TRANSIT and the MCIA approved the initial funding agreement for the North Brunswick Train Station Project. Under this agreement, the MCIA will coordinate input from NJ TRANSIT, AMTRAK, New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), the North Brunswick Township developer, and Middlesex County. In 2020, the MCIA officially entered into this partnership with NJ TRANSIT through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) which permits the MCIA to serve as the project manager overseeing the design and construction of the project. The Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA) was tasked with managing the project, a first-of-its-kind partnership between NJ TRANSIT and a county.

With funding in place, the North Brunswick Train Station Project moved forward. After planning and discussion continued on the project, the New Jersey State Legislature allocated $50 million for the North Brunswick Train Station Project through the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund (NJTTF) in 2017. The North Brunswick Train Station Project was proposed as far back as 15 years ago.
